To: Users of the NDSU-VDL
Attached please find a revised submission guide for bovine trichomoniasis. We have
made a few changes to optimize our ability to give you accurate results. In particular,
notice that we need to receive samples that have been at room temperature by 72
hours post collection or, if refrigerated, within a week.
We are now offering electronic EIA test processing through Veterinary Services Process
Streamlining (VSPS). For more information on VSPS go to:
www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/vsps/register.htm. The EIA test charge is $5.50 per
sample for North Dakota horses and $6.60 for out of state. There are no additional
charges for the electronic processing. Call us if you have questions.
On another note, this seems to have been a fall and early winter in which the lab
has seen an increase in the number of Histophilus somni cases in cattle. We have
seen myocardial, respiratory and neurologic manifestations of this infection. It
occurs as a co-pathogen, but we have often isolated it alone. Mycoplasma bovis has
been a frequent isolate from respiratory cases as well. Both of these organisms
are part of our routine bovine respiratory workup.
Refresher information on BVD Ear Notch Testing is also enclosed. Thanks for your
continued use of the lab and please contact us with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Neil Dyer, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVP
