New Screening Assay for Bladder Cancer in Small Animals
The NDSU-VDL is adding a new screening assay for suspect cases of bladder cancer in small animals. This screening process will include the Veterinary Bladder Tumor Antigen test, V-BTA (Polymedco), and examination of urine sediment following drying and Diff-Quik staining. We feel this two tiered approach will provide a high level of diagnostic certainty in cases where bladder cancer is suspected.
Urine samples obtained by free catch or cystocentesis are preferred for the V-BTA assay. Urine should be collected without preservatives in a clean, dry urine cup (not paper or foam). Ideally, testing should occur within 48 hours of collection, therefore it should be mailed to the lab the day it is collected. Chill, but do not freeze the urine.
If urine is to be used for other tests (culture or urinalysis) separate out a portion of the specimen to avoid contamination. The cost of the test is $40.00.
Please contact the Diagnostic Lab at 701-231-8307 or 701-231-7527 if you have any questions. Send samples to:
